OUR SERVICES
The mission of Kearney Literacy Council is to promote literacy by offering programs designed to conquer illiteracy and provide English language skills within our community.
English Language Tutoring
Kearney Literacy Council supports individuals of all ages and stages of English language proficiency. We offer free tutoring sessions for adults wanting to improve their English reading, writing, and speaking skills. We also offer free tutoring to assist individuals preparing to take the U.S. citizenship exam. Tutoring sessions are held in person at Kearney Public Library.

Book Donations

Literacy rates increase when people have access to books and share in reading with their families. Kearney Literacy Council aspires to get books into the hands of as many children and adults throughout the community as possible.
In partnership with The Sequel Bookshop, Kearney Literacy Council donates books to families moving into their new Habitat for Humanity homes. KLC also uses grants and donations to provide books for Goodfellows Christmas Baskets, large-print books for care facility residents, books for head start, and other initiatives. Over the years, the council has participated in collaboration with many other community organizations to provide thousands of books annually to the Kearney community.
See the Donate page for information about how to donate used books for KLC fundraisers.

Community Events

Kearney Literacy Council hosts and/or helps to promote many literacy events in the community throughout the year. One recent event was “Free Books and Pizza” for teens at Kearney Public Library. Board members and other volunteers also frequently participate in reading-related events in collaboration with other organizations in the area.
